An Islamic themed drama series inspired by true events and based upon historical characters in Islam. About the heroic efforts of Ertugrul Ghazi, the father of Uthman (founder of the Ottoman Empire). It's about the struggles he faced alongside his nomadic tribe in finding a secure settlement to live, how he defended their lands and liberated other lands from oppressive rulers (Crusaders and Mongols) - full of scenes of tawakkul (reliance on Allah), honour, spiritually uplifting and emotional at times, treachery, greed for power, fairness and justice, intertwined with tales of love, humbleness, respect for Awliya, power of zikr, brotherhood, unity and traditions.
Popularity
Rating figures marked Diriliş: Ertuğrul as the best breakthrough Turkish TV series of the 2014 Season. The first episode shook Turkish social media after it was on-aired. Along with Turkey, the series is quite popular among the Islamic world especially in the Middle East and South Asia.
The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, praised the show in a public speech and recommended Pakistanis to watch it and asked PTV (state-owned channel) to broadcast the TV series, dubbed in the Urdu language to promote Islamic history and values and thus was broadcast on the 1st day of Ramdan 2020.
Aside from the Muslim world, the series is also a huge hit in Asia, Europe, Americas and Africa.
Banned
On February 10, 2020, Diriliş: Ertuğrul was banned in Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the UAE directly. Watching this series from Egypt's Fatwa section has been declared forbidden. Fatwa Department also targeted Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in a statement, stating that Erdogan's intention was to restore the Ottoman Empire in the Middle East and restore sovereignty over the Arab countries that had previously been under Ottoman rule. Despite the banned series remained quite popular among people of these nations.
